The Circle of Safety

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” Ephesians 6:1-3

I have heard and read this scripture many times over the weekend. Our pastor preached from this scripture on Sunday morning and then I read it again last night during my study time.

Any time I go out to run errands, I constantly tell my girls to stay close to me. Being a mom of four I can’t hold all of their hands, so I have taught them to either hold each others hands and my pockets or to walk right beside me. At least once a week, I explain to them that their safety depends on them listening to me. If they are not aware of what’s going on around them and are not listening and obeying my voice something terrible could happen to them.

I like how Tedd Tripp explains, “Children’s obedience is not secured so that you can be obeyed for your sake. You must be obeyed for their sakes!”

As long as our children are honoring and obeying our words, they can receive security, safety, and blessings from above. Obedience is willing submission of one person to the authority of another. It means more than a child doing what he is told. It means doing what he is told without challenge, without excuse, and without delay.

One morning the girls and I were making our weekly trip to the grocery store. As everyone was getting out of the car. I saw another car driving up quickly to park into the spot beside us. I quickly told my daughter, getting out of the van, to stop. If she would have questioned me or went ahead anyways, she would have been hit!  When a child steps away from your guidance, rules, or instructions they are putting themselves into harms way. They are walking outside the circle of safety.

Demonstration:

Blindfold your child. Tell them to listen carefully to your words. Now give them a couple of spins around. Next walk them through the house by giving them clear instructions, take one step forward, two steps to the left, etc., but be very specific so they do not fall or hit anything. Now with the blindfold still on, tell them they are free to walk any where they want to, but no one can help them. They will most likely run into some walls or furniture.

The same things happen when a child decides to go on their own and not obey their parents. They can stumble and fall but if they choose to obey their parents their walk will be smoother and may enjoy long life on the earth.

We can talk, lecture, and scold until we are blue in the face, but when we lead by example, something powerful happens. Our children actually have a model to follow after when they see Mom submitting to Dad and their parents submitting to the state and the church, it then goes beyond the words and a connection is made.

 

More Than a Craft

Cross“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

Today we had a time of sharing. We talked about things we are struggling with. We then wrote them down on a piece of paper and stuck them to the cross. I explained to the girls that Christ died for these sins and these negative feelings. When we come to the cross daily, He helps us to overcome these battles.

This was more than a craft, it brought awareness to the hearts of these little girls that sin had been covered. It brought acknowledgement to the weaknesses they have without seeking God’s face everyday, all day. Prayers were spoken with repentance around our kitchen table this afternoon.

Finding ways to make the word living and alive sparks the connection our children hunger for. The next time you have a craft I challenge you to take it a step further!

But I’m Scared!

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

It was bedtime and we were going through the night-time routine and I had just finished bathing the girls. Alayna and Victoria (my older two), went to their rooms and got their jammies on. Victoria came out first, she was dressed and ready for me to brush her hair, a few minutes later Alayna sat down for her turn. As I was brushing Alayna’s hair I noticed Kayla, my youngest daughter, still standing in the hallway with just her towel. I looked at Kayla and I told her to go get her clothes on and she said, “I’m scared”. “Scared”, I questioned. I was sitting right in front of her bedroom door. I asked her, “why are you scared, I’m sitting right here beside you!”

That’s when a small voice spoke to me. Have you ever felt called to speak at church, maybe teach a Sunday school class, or even give a presentation at work? For most people fear comes over them, but why? Our heavenly Father is with us at all times. He will never make us go alone, He will never make you stand by yourself. He is always with us, giving us the strength and courage to do what he has purposed us to do.

Kayla was scared because her room was dark and she felt alone, but what she didn’t realize, is I was right there with her. Take comfort in knowing you aren’t walking into a dark place by yourself, God is right there beside you and He loves you.

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

Where in the World is Uncle Robert? – Newfoundland

Mark 16:15 “He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”

I have a younger brother named, Robert Martin. He began preaching at the age of fourteen! At that same time he gained a passionate addiction to missions and has spent time overseas every year since. He has been to Israel, Canada, England, Dominican Republic, Africa, Peru, and Vanuatu, to just name a few.

I wish I would have thought of this a long time ago when my brother started traveling as an evangelist, the girls and I would be experts in world geography.

This week he is in Springdale, Newfoundland, which is in Canada, so we are diving in to find out all about Newfoundland.

Springdale is a town in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, which had a population of 2,764 in the Canada 2006 Census. The community is located on the North-Western shores of Hall’s Bay, in Central Newfoundland, near the mouth of Indian River. Wikipedia

Newfoundland’s capital is St. John’s. In Springdale, it’s a rainy 42 degrees today. Even though it’s not that cold here in Orlando, FL, we are sharing in the rainy part. Their provincial bird is the Atlantic Puffin, their provincial flower is the Pitcher Plant.

I did a Google search for Newfoundland color sheets and found a great one on the Crayola website.

After learning a little about the province of Newfoundland, we took some time to pray for Uncle Robert and the people of Springdale. My hope is by researching the places Evangelist Robert Martin has traveled or is traveling to, will give the girls a heart for these different nations and an appreciation for the missionaries serving around the world. Who knows maybe one of them will have the call on their life one day, to bring the message to all the nations.

Matthew 28:19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”

 

A New Creation

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Having daily devotions with our kids should be a priority, but I have noticed, if our day does not start with the word, we most likely will not fit it in any other time. Yes, this is sad, but true. Our day can get crazy with school, baby distractions, toddler distractions, house chores and so on.

Today our devotion was about “…everything is made new!” We talked about a butterfly and the changes that take place in a cocoon. While the butterfly is in its cocoon, there are changes taking place, when it breaks free, it is a new creature.

I think of a cocoon being a place where we seek God, where we take time to pray and listen to his voice. During this time there is a change taking place and when we arise we are new.

I explained to the kids there are times when we don’t want to share, when we lose our temper and we make bad choices, but in those times if we are quick to kneel before God, he makes us new again. We don’t have to live in guilt or condemnation, but walk in the assurance that we know Jesus.  He gives us a new morning everyday, when we seek his face (in a our own personal cocoon) we will emerge into a beautiful butterfly ready to fly!

Activity: Have the kids draw and color a new butterfly after emerging from a cocoon. Then write the scripture 2 Corn. 5:17 to remind them they are a new creature in Christ, the old has passed away.

Super Bowl Half Time Show

My husband is a HUGE sports lover. His two favorite things to watch on TV is football and basketball. I made the decision when we got married, to join him rather than fight him about it, even though I’m the kind of person that would rather play the sport than watch the sport. I might not scream at the TV like him but we dress up and support our team.

With that said, yesterday was Super Bowl Sunday. We went to church, grilled out, played football in the back yard with the kids and just enjoyed our day off as a family. When 6 o’clock came around the girls and I started cooking up some yummy snacks to munch on…creamy spinach dip with pumpernickel bread, fresh homemade salsa, fresh cut fruits and some warm yummy brownies (that was my snack choice). The first half of the game was fun, a little yelling and laughing, everyone was enjoying themselves. There were a couple of commercials that were not rated kid friendly, so the girls walked out of the room or closed their eyes. I was just waiting to see what the half time show was going to be all about, what was Beyonce going to do? I already knew it was something I wouldn’t want the girls to watch because of the songs she would be singing but I never even consider what she might be wearing or the way she would be dancing. Two seconds into the presentation, I had the girls go into a different room.

Big picture, would I want our girls wearing a bathing suit/lingerie on stage? NO! Would I want our girls moving their bodies in a way to get all the wrong attention from every guy out there? NO! Do I want our girls learning lyrics like, “Ladies if you love your man, show him you the fliest / Grind up on it, girl, show him how you ride it.” ? Ummm…NO!

I have told others before that I’m a strict Mama. But it’s more than being strict, it’s about character, about values, about self worth. I have the honor of raising four beautiful children. Their minds have come to me pure and clean, ready to learn and thrive. They were not given to me to be tainted with impure thoughts and lust. Think with me about the saying a picture is worth more than a thousand words, WHAT PICTURES ARE WE LETTING OUR CHILDREN COLLECT IN THEIR MIND?

I’m starting a half time super bowl tradition next year, “Paper Football Zone”. Basically, you take a paper football and try to flick across a table into the uprights a person makes on the other end of a table or you could see who could flick the football the furthest. I have a year to plan it and I know it will not include sitting in front of the TV watching the “half time show!”

At Last We Can Be Happy

The Magic Fish

Today Alayna chose to read, “The Magic Fish by Freya Littledale”, for family reading time. If you haven’t read this book with your kids, I would definitely recommend it. It’s a great lesson about contentment.

In the book, the wife keeps asking for more and each time, when she gets what she wants, her husband says, “at last we can be happy.” Her reply back is always, “we shall see.”

Teaching contentment is a priority in our family. When we spend time with family or friends and it’s time to leave, our children will sometimes complain about leaving. I quickly remind them to be thankful, grateful  and content for the time we had with our loved ones. When birthday or Christmas time comes, again I remind them to be content with their gifts and toys. A life of always wanting can lead to bitterness and resentment. They are young and still have to be reminded at times to be content, but if we can learn at an early age what this word means and let it take root in our heart, our life will be so much more enjoyable.

Prayer: Thank you God for supplying every need and even our desires. Thank you for a roof over our head, food on our table, and clothes on our back. But most of all thank you for giving your only son to die on the cross for our sins. For that we should be content in all things. We are blessed and I pray that we all see beyond our selfish wants and at last can say, WE ARE HAPPY!

“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:11-13

Who’s your Cheerleader?

Happy New Year! Here’s the first blog of 2013!

Have you ever thought about your actions and feelings? When someone or something crosses your way that brings anger or bitterness do you feed those negative thoughts? Do you sit and dwell on them?

Today I had my daughters sit down and picture in their minds themselves getting mad, angry and even losing their temper. Then I told them to picture the devil in hell. Yes, the devil in hell standing there rubbing his hands together and smiling while they hit their sister or pitch a fit. The opposite happens when we are quick to forgive and we act selfless to others. Now imagine with me, God your father smiling in heaven as you share your toys with your friends.

This also works the same with adults. Think of when you talk bad about someone, just because you didn’t like what they did or what they said. The devil is having a cheering party. He knows the more you feed those negative words and feelings, the harder your heart will become. But if we would stop and pull out those four letters that everyone use to wear on their wrist (WWJD) our hearts would  be quick to forgive and share the love of Jesus with others through all circumstances.

I asked the girls who they wanted to be their cheerleader. Without hesitation they said, God! I explained they will have to think about their words, feelings and actions toward others at all times.

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

The Baby Left Behind Part 5

*A Jesus Baby Book: Did your mom or dad keep a baby book for you? Ask if you can look at it. It will have pictures of you as a baby. It will tell interesting things about when you were young and how you grew.  You can make a baby book for Jesus. Think about the chapters you read in Matthew and  Luke. There are many things you learned about Jesus’ birth. Draw pictures of these things on some pieces of paper. Write Bible  verses that tell about each picture. Now stack the papers and punch two holes on one end. Thread a long piece of yarn through the holes. Tie the yarn to hold the papers together.

As a mother of three precious girls and one precious boy, I could not imagine having my own agenda on their birthday. Just think if I were to say I don’t have time for cake and presents, we’re too busy shopping for other people, we have to decorate the house for someone else! Their poor little heart would be broken. No, our world stops for our children’s birthdays. We plan parties, yes plural. We usually have a small one on their birthday and then another one on the following Saturday for all their friends to come to. We want to show them how much we love them and how special they are to us, so even more should we stop and celebrate the baby boy who came to save the world.

Thank you heavenly father for giving your only baby boy to die, so that we may live. Thank you Mary for obeying and trusting in the Lord. Thank you Joseph for not caring what the world thinks but holding true to what our heavenly father says. There are many lessons in this story to be learned, great character traits to follow after and verses to hold close to our heart. May we never forget the baby boy who came to give us this beautiful life we love and enjoy.

3 Wisemen

Day 4: Wise Men from the East

*Read Matthew 2:1-12

*Wise Men Craft: Giggles and more giggles were heard throughout the house today with our painted camel craft. First I painted their hand, then they placed it on the paper one at time. Again, we choose to do the craft together, which I like better. It’s cute to see the different sizes of hands. Next I painted their pointer finger, they choose the color, this represented the wise men. Super simple cute craft for all ages!

*Short story: The wise men came from the East. No one is sure where they lived. When they saw a bright new star, they believed it told of the birth of a special child. These men were probably rich and journeyed on camels with servants to care for them. They reached Jerusalem some time after Jesus was born. First they visited King Herod, then the star led them to Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. There, they worshipped Jesus and gave him gifts. (From: The First Christmas)
